highest level in nearly 15 years. this is according to a new report from the energy information administration. daily production, daily output, averaged almost 6.5 million barrels per day in september, the highest level of oil output in the u.s. since 1998. eia says the increase is mostly due to the extraction process known as fracking, new technology to get oil in every nook and cranny. some coined a phrase saudi america for america's projected energy boom over the next decade. a report from last month from the international energy watchdog says the u.s. could unseat saudi arabia as the world's top oil producer by the year 2020. >>> quick market check this morning, u.s. stock futures are up, fiscal cliff uncertainty could continue to weigh on stocks until it's resolved. we're getting a lot of economic news this week with the jobs report on friday. so i expect to see hurricane sandy was at play in there. >> figuring into that report. looking forward to that. >>> first it was republicans throwing the president's fiscal cliff plan right back at him. now it's the president's turn.

are on the rise and another pulse of energy pointing its way right at northern california. it will be the fourth pulse of heavy wind, rain and snow coming into this area over a five-day period. look at some of the damage out of oakland. a number of homes damaged because of flooding and rains there. roads damaged as well this is widespread, across the bay area, southern parts of oregon, just the infrastructure can't handle this moisture and underwashing some of these roadways. rescues, high water rescues yesterday and over the weekend. you can just imagine when some of these small streams come up and over the roadways, if you're driving through them people get stuck. the crews are brought in to try to get the job done and folks to safety. across napa valley, incredible flooding there. the napa valley seeing some of its worst rainfall in years. look at these numbers. petrolia, california, over 17 inches. bridgeville, 15 inches. that's an incredible amount of rain. to see that much rainfall is truly remarkable. we are seeing more in the way of rainfall across seattle and portland it has stopped for

to value that end of the company. >> tough call. thank you. let's check out latest news in energy and metals. sharon epperson at the nimax. >> i'm in the gold pit. gold below $1,700 an ounce. steep selling we see today in gold is reminiscent of what happened just a week ago. heavy volume. a lot of selling. last week the story was we saw a lot of put option activity. a lot of puts at the strike price around 1,700, and where are prices today? right in that range. it seems unusual that we're looking at exactly what was actually forecast by some of the put option activity we saw a week ago. we're watching the prices fall. some traders say it's a liquidation of many global macro funds who now before the end of the year want to take their profits here in the gold market and not only in gold, yes, gold is at a one-month low but we're looking at a sell-off in the natural market and natural gas looking at seasonal demand figure, storage levels with weaker prices across the board in commodities. >> sharon epperson, thanks for that. coming up next, a live interview with house majority whip k
